CHAPTER 11

When they reconvened, Kat and her friends decided that dining out was still a good idea, and chose a popular restaurant not far from the bus and train stations.

“I guess this is what the British would call a ‘posh’ restaurant,” Mitzi said, as she walked inside and clearly approved of the décor. The hostess seated them in a window booth with a view of the street and the marina beyond.

“I agree. This does seem to be a very plush restaurant,” Marion said, as she sat down and accepted a menu from the hostess. The others did the same.

Lennon, Marion, and Mitzi all chose the leg of lamb, but Kat couldn’t resist the seafood salad, complete with freshly caught crab, salmon, prawns and mussels, with a side of kipper pâté.

Over dinner, Kat relayed her recent conversation with Sergeant Nick Black. She told them her theory that perhaps Sam had known his murderer, because apparently he hadn’t felt threatened by whoever it was.

“A dozen strange scenarios could have occurred which might invalidate my theory, being real-life and all, but I think it might be a starting point,” Kat said as she continued to eat. “Sergeant Black doesn’t think Lily is involved either, at least not at this stage. He only took her in for questioning since she was Sam’s partner, which narrows the field of suspects even further.”

“I get what you’re saying,” Mitzi said. “But where do you go from here?”

“Good question, Mitzi. Good question.”

The group paid their bill and enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the marina, admiring the boats. Once they’d seen enough, they headed back to Jock’s pub, quite full after their dinner and very content in the brisk sea air of the Yorkshire coast.

They were immediately greeted with an animated welcome when they walked into The Captain’s Quarters by Bert and Barbara. As soon as the couple spotted Kat and her friends walking into the bar, they hurried over to them.

“You’ll never believe who we saw drinking in the Queen’s Arms tonight,” Bert said, hardly able to keep his excitement contained.

Kat gave him a small shrug of her shoulders, “Anyone interesting Bert?”

“Oh yes! It was only that Tom fellow who Sam barred from the pub for causing problems. He was sitting in the Queen’s Arms all brazen as if he didn’t have a care in the world. If you ask me, he is a bad egg, that one.”

“Really? Which pub is the Queen’s Arms? Is it close by?” Kat asked.

Mitzi gave Kat a suspicious look.

“Yes, it’s just past the bridge, overlooking the marina from this side of the estuary. It’s easy enough to find. Tom’s the one wearing the red soccer shirt.”

“I know what you’re thinking,” Mitzi said. “I’m guessing you’d like to go for a random walk all of a sudden, probably to the Queen’s Arms, would I be right?”

“Well, seeing as how you suggested it, Mitzi,” Kat said with a grin, and then turned towards Lennon and Marion. “Mitzi and I are just going out for half an hour or so.
